Join The Hershey Story Museum for our inaugural book club!
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America

Eric Larson’s tale of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago intertwines the grandeur of the Fair with the gruesome actions of a serial killer. The historical characters in this non-fiction work come to life through Larson’s detailed prose, a style that stems from his meticulous research and desire to humanize the past. He says, “I really don’t consider myself a historian. I consider myself a writer who writes historical stories, true stories, but my interest is in the story. That’s why my subjects are all over the place. I don’t stick to any one field because I go where the story is, and my goal is that people will so sink into the action of the book that afterward they will have a sense of maybe having lived in that time and, if not, they will at least have experienced the action in almost a visceral way. So that’s the goal.”

And although he’s not mentioned in the book, the impact of the Fair on Milton Hershey is part of the historical backdrop of the era portrayed in the novel.

Select either the afternoon session from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m., or the evening session from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. This event is free, but seating is limited and registration is required here starting March 5.
