Milton S. Hershey was a successful entrepreneur whose keen business sense and philanthropic approach were instrumental in establishing his chocolate company over a century ago. Each Scout will make a chocolate confection to take home as well as explore the museum’s exhibits during the workshop.

Registered Scouts must complete, and submit in writing to the merit badge counselor at [email protected],  the following two prerequisites at least one week prior to the workshop:

Scouts BSA “Indian Lore” Merit Badge Workshop UPDATE
The Hershey Story Museum is temporarily suspending the Indian Lore Merit Badge program for Scouts.

The reason for the suspension is due to updates to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), which governs the repatriation of Native American ancestral remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony to lineal descendants and federally recognized tribes.

As of December 2023, museums are required to obtain prior and informed consent from lineal descendants, culturally affiliated tribes or Native Hawaiian Organizations before allowing any exhibition of, research of or access to cultural items.

Through the provisions of NAGPRA, the federal government acts to treat the remains of Native ancestors and their material culture with dignity, and to return them to their communities with respect for their customs, religion and traditions.

The Hershey Story Museum hopes to reinstate this program in the future, once we better understand the regulations, and after receiving proper and informed consent.

We welcome this opportunity to continue our own learning and deepen our relationships with Indigenous communities.
